I just finished reading a book that I really, really enjoyed. I had gone to Barnes and Noble to buy "The Shack" and picked this one up, too, on a whim. It was a really good book with really great characters. The book is called "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". It is by first time author Mary Ann Shaffer, with some help from author Annie Barrows. I read it in one sitting, something that doesn't happen very often lately. It is based in Guernsey, one of the English Channel Islands, just after its German occupation during World War II. It is written as a series of letters, a format that I haven't really liked in the past, but it worked really well in this book. If you run across this book, give it a try! That sounds like a good read -- I enjoy books set in that time period. I'm hoping my library has a copy, though, because I've gone a bit nuts here lately buying books (the Twilight Saga will be the death of my bank account). I can understand that totally. The bookstore is THE MOST dangerous place you can possibly set me loose, at least as far as my bank account is concerned! I hope your library carries the book. It's pretty new, I think, so you may need to wait a couple of weeks.

I know what you mean about the Barnes and Noble trap -- I rarely escape without spending at least $100 so I have to limit my trips! My son is also a reader so when the two of us go we can forget eating for the rest of the week!
I just finished "The Tender Bar" by JR Moehringer, it was a great book and I highly recommend it.

Both my daughters are avid readers, too. My younger daughter will spend every penny that she gets for birthdays and Christmas at Barnes and Noble without a second thought. For my family at least, that $25 B & N membership card makes A LOT of sense. LOL!
What makes B & N so dangerous for me is that it is close enough to my house and to the general area where I tend to be, so if I have a few minutes to spare it is the logical place to stop. Well, I consider myself lucky if I can get out of there at under $30.
There's just something so awesome about a brand new unopened book . . .
I'll look into "The Tender Bar".

I taught FRANKENSTEIN to high school seniors. Most of them really liked it; we got into the idea of the ugly outside hiding the more beautiful inside. After we finished it, we watched the movie and then (since I'm such a hugh Johnny Depp fan) I showed them Edward Scissorhands. That usually made a big impact on them.
Yesterday I finished SAIL by James Patterson; I am now reading NOTHING TO LOSE by Lee Child.

Nana oh, i've been wanting to read that one. almost bought it a couple of weeks ago. is it any good? i just finished "The Ruins" by Scott Smith (the movie came out earlier this year) it's a very crazy, twisted book. it takes a little too long to get into the story, but it's totally worth it to stick it out!

I really liked SAIL - actually read it in one day. I read THE RUINS, too - scary book!! I didn't see the movie, though; did you?

yeah, it was good, but not nearly as good as the book, as always! if you'd never read the book, you would enjoy it more.

I'm reading "Emma Brown" by Charlotte Bronte and Clare Boylan, "Intern" by Sandeep Jauhar, Ann Coulter's latest book, "Climate Confusion" by an author whose name escapes me at present, and "Kabul Beauty School" by Deborah Rodriguez. Most of them are pretty interesting.

I'm in the middle of "The Shack" and it is so good. One of those that's hard to put down! Cathy Anne, I read "This Present Darkness", a few years ago. It was really good too.

Cathy Anne, I had wanted to say that the first time I read "This Present Darkness" was when my oldest son was in high school. He gave it to me to read after he had finished it. It was my first introduction to spiritual warfare and totally terrified me as well as captivated me! I could not put it down. I have since then read "Piercing the Darkness" as well as the third book "The Visitation" (I think ). Frank Peretti also has a preteen series and High School Series out which I also found to be very good. I highly recommend his books!

Fixing to start "Save Me From Myself" by Brian 'Head' Welch... the former lead guitarist from the rock band Korn..... He was saved by Jesus Christ in front of 10,000 concert goers and this is his memoir and his inside story to the rock star lifestyle... will let you all know how I liked it...

Hey everyone...I bought Frankenstein and The Shack to read on my visit to my parents in Cleveland. My Dad took over both books which I was really so happy about! So...I am now reading Therapy by Jonathon Kellerman (one of my favorite authors). And just picked up a new copy of The Shack for myself and am totally absorbed!

I was a voracious reader when I was younger but I had been remiss in indulging the literati in me the past couple of years. I guess the last substantial book I read is The Kite Runner; it had been sitting in the shelf for a while and it would probably still be sitting there untouched by me if Jason hadn't brought it up, so thanks, Jason. I'm currently reading The 50 Greatest Love Letters of All Time. I love Elizabeth Barrett Browning's letter to George Barrett (on the subject of Robert Browning's love for her) the best, so far.

jayeb, i will look forward to your review, sounds interesting!
I must say I am so happy to see that Jasons fans are a literary bunch. And I love that Jason has made both reading and practicing one's faith "cool" things for people to do and talk about. I think Cook has gotten alot of people reading again, too, and talking about books. Yay for Cookstro! #goodjobsign-1#

It is a really awesome testimony from Brian about his days with the band Korn.... How God used many different things to bring him to where he is today.. About his love for his daughter and how she fit into the plan God has for him.... a definite A+ and I thank my 21 year old son for the recommendation....
