Today I was chatting with my neighbor, Rachel who is a high school English teacher. Our conversation runs the gambit, and usually includes what she is reading. Today she mentioned she just finished "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. It's the first book her students will be reading this year. She said she had never read it and found it very interestingly relevant and connected to issues we have in our society today. Has anyone read "Frankenstein?" Just wonderin' what you think. I might give it a shot. #thscratch# I believe I either read it in high school or college, but I do remember enjoying it. The original Dracula is also quite good if you want to read something else along the same vein.

Right now I'm reading Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It's kinda CSI set in the 12th century. That sounds good -- let us know if it would be worth reading.

i'm almost done with 'the kite runner', then i'm going to read 'marley & me!' but before that i read 'the alchemist' which i loved. =D <3 I really enjoyed "Marley & Me"! I had put off reading it for such a long time, but I loved it and can't wait 'til the movie comes out in December! I recently finished "The Beach House" by Jane Green. It was good, but not great, IMHO.

It was good, but not great, IMHO. I read Marley and Me about a year ago and I loved it. It really hit home for me because I had a dog that was just like Marley. Even the ending was the same. It's almost scary. I can't wait for the movie.

I really need to get back to reading. Jason mentioned that he just finished reading a Texas memoir called "The Same Kind of Different As Me." It sounds like a good book. I think I'm going to check that out. Thanks for the confirmation on Frankenstein. The book that you mention, I believe was given to JC in Phillie by a College English Prof. (I was at the Phillie buses)...and also read the account of when she gave it to him! Let me know how you like it!

Well, I finally finished UTOPIA by Lincoln Child. It took me most of the summer after we got home from our beach vacation. It is a very good novel-I just had a lot going on this summer and couldn't read a lot. Now I am ready to start THE WHEEL OF DARKNESS, which is by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston. It's the latest novel in their Agent Pendergast series. If you like mystery novels with a scientific edge, check out their books. The wrote the book RELIC, which was a movie a while back, but the book is so much better then the movie was, and I got absorbed in the series of novels these 2 guys have since written. I also have The KITE RUNNER to read, also.

I just finished The Lovely Bones - really good, but very sad I started reading The Lovely Bones earlier this year, but it was a bit odd for my tastes and I stopped reading it just a couple chapters in. Should I have continued with it? I think so. It starts out a bit boring, and generally stays at the same slow pace, but I still found it very engrossing - seeing how her family deals with the fallout of what happened as the years go by, how her friends handle it, finding out more about the killer. I literally couldn't put it down until I was done. So yeah, I'd give it a second chance, but that's just my opinion - I realize that it isn't for everyone.

IMO The Lovely Bones is worth finishing. It IS a strange book to go through but I found it emotionally satisfying at its conclusion.....

I'm reading Watchman. It's a graphic novel and I'm really enjoying the whole experience. I've never read a graphic novel but I love the combination of dialog, illustrations, and text excerpts - it's pretty cool.

Books written in that era were usually full of social commentary that people didn't speak of literally, Frankenstein in no exception. It's a very good book actually.

I just finished reading a book that I really, really enjoyed. I had gone to Barnes and Noble to buy "The Shack" and picked this one up, too, on a whim. It was a really good book with really great characters. The book is called "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". It is by first time author Mary Ann Shaffer, with some help from author Annie Barrows. I read it in one sitting, something that doesn't happen very often lately. It is based in Guernsey, one of the English Channel Islands, just after its German occupation during World War II. It is written as a series of letters, a format that I haven't really liked in the past, but it worked really well in this book.
If you run across this book, give it a try!

That sounds like a good read -- I enjoy books set in that time period. I'm hoping my library has a copy, though, because I've gone a bit nuts here lately buying books (the Twilight Saga will be the death of my bank account).
