I recently adopted a soldier! My mom has been a Soldier's Angel for a few years now, and I decided last week that I wanted to do it as well. I sent in my application and on St. Patrick's Day I was assigned to an Irish soldier serving in Iraq. I'm responsible for sending him a weekly letter or card, or really anything like jokes, pictures, etc.. Just so he'll have something when mail comes. Also sending him a monthly care package. I'm so happy I was accepted and it feels so good knowing i'm somehow helping this guy who is doing an amazing thing for our country. www.soldiersangels.org

I bulk-order a lot of my food each month, and for the first time, I ordered some for the local food shelf. When I talked to my food shelf people, they said as long as it was in sealed packages, they could repackage it into smaller quantities.

I have an elderly neighbor (87!) and I've been picking up fallen branches, wind-blown trash, etc that have found their way into her yard. I make it a point too visit with her regularly. I cut her hedges in the summertime and get her car out of the snow in the wintertime. It's not something that I think about like, "Oh, I'm going to do this nice thing". It's more second-nature and I would hope someone would treat me the same way when I'm her age.

In honor of Jason's birthday, we're asking everyone who is able to do a Random Act of Kindness and then tell us about it. Jason is so committed to service and helping others that we thought this would be a nice opportunity to follow his lead. Please remember that service is anything you do for someone else with no expectation of payment or a return favor. Running a friend who is having car trouble to the grocery store or to do their errands is service. Doing yard work for an elderly neighbor is service. It doesn't have to be attached to a formal organization. Please share the Random Acts of Kindness you've done in honor of Jason's 22nd Birthday with everyone. We'd love to see how creative everyone has been. #10#

I donated food to my local food pantry...with times as tough as they are the demand is greater than ever...and I can't stand the thought of anyone going hungry especially a child.

Well I did not honestly do this in honor of Jason's Birthday, but I will share a random act of kindness that in return brought me joy.
So this Sunday at church the pastor talked about being there for people during hardships (his son who is 6 has leukemia, so he was speaking from personal experience.) The first thing he said was to just "SHOW UP." And he meant 'physically."
Sooooo...I am a volunteer leader with some freshman girls in a youth organization. On e of the girls found out she's moving to Colorado and has grown up in Dallas her whole life. It's a HUGE transition for this family. My co-leader and I took her some ice cream, sat and talked with her and her parents about everything. Kids are sad about the move and all their friends are taking it REALLY hard. So I basically just showed up for emotional support.
It was a kind-of awkward thing to do at first...just go by her house, but in the end the parents were SO GRATEFUL and thanked us when we left. They said it meant a lot to their daughter, Shelby.
Goodnight!

In honor of Jason's bday I cleaned his entire condo...did ALL the laundry and went grocery shopping so he would feel "at home" when he got home that night from practice! I looked like your neighborhood "Merry Maid" at the airport cause I got so enthralled in my project I almost forgot to head to the airport till Jackie told me what time it was! I didn't get a chance to change and I was hoping no one would recognize us...Thank God, no one said a thing :-)

I do random acts of kindness all the time, but feel weird about announcing them. However, I gave a little girl cotton candy at Venice Beach yesterday.

In honor of Jason's birhtday I have been staying at the hospital with a young lady who lost a baby, had to have surgery, had an unexpeded blood clot in her lungs and was in icu for days. I have been helping the family take turns so they could go home to shower, etc. Now I will stay with her some at home so her husband can go back to work. Also, after reading about the adopt a soilder, I think I will sign up. Thanks Amanda for the idea. Jason has really encouraged us to find ways to help others. Little things do make a difference.

Well an oldery woman I know was rushed to the hospital with ulcer problems and I found out about it after the fact and someone told me that she was going home but the bathroom was a mess and blood there from what happened and needed someone to clean it up. I offered and protected myself fully and cleaned the whole bathroom. I was shocked when I saw it, it had been neglected for months! It took a while but I got the whole bathroom sparkling again. Then I saw her whole apartment and it was full of piles of magazines and tapes, you could hardly walk through her apartment. It was like those hourder shows you see on Oprah. Anyway, after she came back I sat with her and went through the piles and made her decide what to throw away and what to keep. My son and I the next day threw away about 5 full garbage bins out back of the condo buildings and they are huge bins! Her apartment is now empty with a few piles of magazines and I go to her house once a month to clean her bathroom for her as she does not have the money to pay for someone else. It makes me happy to help elderly people.

I didn't do this in honor of Jason's birthday because I have been doing it for 3 years. It is a card ministry that I am in. It is a Yahoo group hearts4seniors. We have a list of seniors we send cards. We can send to as many as we want each week or a certain number. We do it to brighten up their day and put a smile on their faces. In turn we get so blessed by sending to them. I love doing this so much.

I was given the opportunity to give one of my nice possesions (like a toy that I kept) to a young Mexican child that seems to not have a lot of really nice things. Her parents are our landscapers, and they are extremely nice. A few weeks ago (before the announcement to do kind acts in honour of Jason), I gave her my nice aqua bike, blue flowery helmet, and safety accesories. Now I get to give her something more!

Love, love, love the Random Acts of Kindness idea. This is what the adults in my family do for Christmas in lieu of gifts.
So my small contributions from last week in honor of Jason: (1) I paid the toll for the car behind me in the Express Toll lane, then drove off. (2) At the Downtown Aquarium, there was a very long line of children waiting to get balloon creations from the Balloon Lady, who I overheard her saying she hadn't had a break for hours and was starving. So I got out of line and brought her a Coke and soft pretzel. She practically had tears in her eyes. (3) I patiently listened to a poor young saleman at my door trying to sell me new windows for the house, instead of slamming the door rudely in his face, which would've been my normal reaction!

meltdownmegan, that is a very sweet thing you're wanting to do for your mom. Help her around the house by picking up your stuff, getting the to-be-washed clothes where they need to be, putting dishes away....little things like that will help her alot because she's probably worried about a lot of other stuff right now. She's very blessed to have such a loving daughter as you.

Okay... I waited until today being it's Jason's birthday of course. I cross a bridge on my way to work which is $1 to cross. I stopped at the booth and gave the guy $30 just for doing a great job. I told him about Jason Castro and he said had heard of him, I told him to check out his page on MS. Then I gave him another $20 to pay for the next 20 people who pass.
It was really nice to start the day out that way. Thanks Jason for spreading your joy of the world and it's gifts that go unforseen. You are truly a blessing to all of us and the Lord IS proud!
