In honor of Jason's birthday, we're asking everyone who is able to do a Random Act of Kindness and then tell us about it. Jason is so committed to service and helping others that we thought this would be a nice opportunity to follow his lead. Please remember that service is anything you do for someone else with no expectation of payment or a return favor. Running a friend who is having car trouble to the grocery store or to do their errands is service. Doing yard work for an elderly neighbor is service. It doesn't have to be attached to a formal organization.
Please share the Random Acts of Kindness you've done in honor of Jason's 22nd Birthday with everyone. We'd love to see how creative everyone has been.

I always love to do random acts of kindness, so, here goes a few: On a recent very rainy day, after leaving a department store, I kind of ran to my car, even though I had an umbrella (wind sucks). After I got into my car, I saw that the man next to me was putting new wipers on his truck, so, I got out, and, held my umbrella over him to help, because, he was soaking wet. Also, any time that I'm in line paying for something, and, someone is looking for change, if I have it, I give it to them. One last thing, a smile is ALWAYS a great way to spread kindness.....just smile at everyone & see how affecting it is to you & the person that you smiled at

My kids and I spent about an hour and a half this morning cleaning an older neighbour's yard. The snow has all melted (for now -- it will probably be back) so we cleared out the windblown leaves and twigs and crap that had made their way into her yard and had parked themselves along her fences and shrubs.
After we took the bags of yard trash to the burn plant, we came home to have cocoa and listen to Black Sabbath. Cause we're wholesome like that.

I'd normally feel funny posting about this because it feels...well..,I believe in doing things for people because you want to or it's the right thing to do. Talking about how you do things for people is like putting the spotlight back on you, instead of it being helpful to someone in need. KWIM?
But I"m going to tell you this because you've asked for us to tell about our random act of kindness, and because I hope it helps to illustrate that you can find opportunities anywhere to just be kind.
Yesterday I paid for the woman in front of me at the grocery store. Well, for part of her order. She was about $10 short and she was probably 80 years old. I just told the cashier to add it to mine. She was grateful and I felt good about it.

I agree Cinna.... and I usually don't talk about it...but doing little things for people...helping them out...makes you feel so good...and even makes you feel better without telling anyone about it...but just doing it...but just as Cinna said this is in honor of Jason...and his birthday...so here goes:...Because of the CUSP PROJECT...and Jason's inspiration...I bought canned goods and delivered them to The Family Mission near my home every month for awhile ..then I stopped....and I don't know why. and I always felt bad about that......but now...because of Jason again..... I went to the Mission..asked them what they needed..went to the grocery store bought canned goods again......and I will deliver the food right on Jason's birthday... so Jason...you are my inspiration once again...as you are for all of us.

I feel the same as you Cinna and Artie...was raised to do good deeds, but not tell about it. So I try to live my life giving to others as I am able by doing small everyday things.
This past week I had offered to babysit (for free) a family member while the parent worked. Well, the parent got sick so I told them not to worry that I would take care of the child all week, day & night.
I recycle magazines by giving them to people who would not/could not subscribe anyway.
A few women needed a flower arrangement for a shower they were giving. They supplied the materials and I made it for them...didn't know the honoree or go to the shower...just helped by using one of my natural talents.
I share these ideas because it doesn't take any money to give to others...just giving your time and energy is all that's needed.

My family likes to drive around Austin, Tx and deliver individual servings of homemade meals to homeless people under bridges and standing at intersections with signs. We'll do that for Jason's birthday.
Jason's genuine sense of volunteerism is why I support him.

During the year I knit hats, mittens and socks which I donate to the youth group my son belonged to in high school. They in turn go into the city and give the gift of warmth to homeless people.
Since I love to knit and like any obsessed knitter I have a stash of yarns...this hardly feels like service.

Today I was driving to get gasoline at Walmart. I had 2 separate gift cards that I charge up each week. Today, there was a young man about my son and Jason's age with a sign saying he was out of gas, Please Help. I drove past and then immediately thought of this thread. So I turned around and went to him. I told him that there was only $5.25 on the card, but that I wanted him to have it in honor of Jason Castro's birthday. I asked him if he knew him and clarified that yes, he did have dreads and played the guitar. I told him that his fans were doing random acts of kindness in honor of his birthday because he is himself so committed to service. He was very impressed and grateful. I had a smile the rest of the day. :-)

I often do random acts of kindness cause it's just the way I am but don't usually talk or post about it. I have compassion for all.
Let's see, one of the latest things is my Church is organizing a new and improved Youth Ministry and needed volunteers to help. I volunteered my time by creating a new web page on our Parish's web site to promote it and donated money toward the mission as well.
I also have been supporting my brother who recently lost his job, his apartment and is divorced and needed a place to stay so he's living with me & my husband right now and if you knew my brother, it's not easy but I do it cause I care.
At Easter time and other Holidays, I usually invite our friend Doug, who is handicapped over for a good Holiday meal. He doesn't have any family nearby and we don't want him to be alone on Holidays.

Well, I did something out of my comfort zone today. There is an elderly couple in my neighborhood - my dh knows the husband because he has helped him with car problems, but I'm kind of hermit-like when it comes to my neighbors. Anyway, I baked a big batch of chocolate chip cookies today, walked over and gave them to these folks. It turns out that the lady had unsuccessful back surgery in the fall, just got back from multiple hospital stays and I think getting the cookies brightened their day. This was such an easy thing to do but I actually wouldn't have thought of it without Jason's inspiration.

I go to a local church food pantry to help my 81 year old neighbor who is on a very fixed income and I just leave the food at her front door with a little note " from your friend" . This way she doesn't loose her dignity because she is from the old school where you don't ask for help. I also helped a homeless neighborhood dog find a good home. I find that the more good that I do for the world. The world gives back to me in a very positive karma.

I cross stitch squares for children with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and send them to Cole's quilts where a wonderful woman named Linda creates beautiful quilts for each child. The children pick a theme such as Care Bears or cars, butterflies etc. and volunteers stitch a square which matches the theme. Then there's enough to make a quilt. I also like to crochet and am in a group where we make chemo caps, preemie hats and blankets for the hospital and lap blankets for the vets home. I also like to help anyone in my travels who needs help. You never know what someone is going through in their life so they may appear abrupt or in a rage but it's probably not anything personal towards you. A simple jesture of letting them go ahead of you on line in a store if they have less to buy than you or are in a hurry can make a person's day. It takes so little to do.

This weekend my daughter and I collected eleven huge bags of clothing and shoes to donate to cancer research.
I try to do a kindness for a stranger every day, either in deed or a good word. And a wise man once said, 'a smile can make all the difference in someone's day' and it costs you nothing to give it away.
I always think about how people need our love the most when they are at their least lovable.
Love you Jason. Have a Wonderful Birthday!

ITA, cinna, artie and others about giving without publicizing, and with artie to credit CUSP with gettin me onto some new avenues back last summer. So it was with our local shelter (I don't really say homeless shelter, cause right now its a lot of transitional people and forclosees). Its really top notch, and food donations can be anything (need not be canned or boxes etc.) so I've been trying to donate actually good stuff like fresh veggies, and fun stuff kids would like (a whole wing of it it if family units) . . .
so in honor of this day I made "anything with cake"--that is, lots of homemade cupcakes with pretty pastel icing aaannnd, *sprinkles!

I have a friend who is really sick. I convinced another friend of ours to come with me and go pick her up and take her to the beach for the weekend. We couldn't do much at the beach (she is that sick)except watch movies, read magazines and paint our nails but it was fun just being together. We have kids so it was hard to go away but I am so glad we did. We not only helped her but it also gave her husband a little time to go do something for himself.
